Sedgwick and Murchison. Stumbling-block is the greywacke slate.
British geologist, priest and professor of Cambridge University Adam Sedgwick (1785 - 1873) allocated Devonian (together with Murchison) and Cambrian geological periods. Sedgwick was and remained a friend of Ch. Darwin, but at the same time severely criticized his theory.
British geologist, a retired captain of Dragoons, Sir Roderick I. Murchison (1792 - 1871) highlighted the Silurian, Devonian (with Sedgwick) and Permian geological periods. After study of the Urals he predicted presence of fields of gold in Australia. Murchison founded the Royal Geographical Society. He was a creationist and an adherent of the theory of catastrophes. Both researchers in their joint report in 1835 provided a general scheme of division of the Cambrian and Silurian, accepting two layers of different ages of greywacke slate as one. Sedgwick attributed it toward the Cambrian, but Murchison - toward the Silurian. The distinctions of paleontological findings in these layers entered confusing of researchers.
This feature of ancient life became cause of enmity prominent scholars new time.
