Mechnikov and Erlich. Mutual immunity
Russian biologist (embriologist, bacteriologist and immunologist) Ilya Mechnikov (1845 – 1916). In Odessa, where he worked, local doctors reproached him in absence of medical formation. It was one of the reasons of his emigration in 1887. At that time he had all necessary materials about phagocytosis, which we know as attribute of cellular immunity. From now on he worked in Paris in Paster' institute. Mechnikov died from the next heart attack.
German physician, immunologist, bacteriologist, chemist, the founder of the chemotherapy Paul Erlich (1854 – 1915) developed the theory of humoral immunity. He believed that the immunity provided by specific molecules which are produced in the serum of blood as reply to alien substances. Erlich died from insult.
Erlich and the most of researchers did not accept the position of Mechnikov. At the same time Mechnikov himself wrote about absence of contradictions of both theories that "complement each other". Impressionable and sentimental Mechnikov was grieved by this situation.
Time showed that immunity is defined both by cellular and humoral factors. Both received Nobel Prize for “labour on immunity” in 1908..
