Basov and Prokhorov. Incoherent relations
Russian physicist A.M. Prokhorov (Alexander M. Prokhorov, 1916 - 2002) is the author of the eminent developments in different theoretical and applied sections of physics. He proposed the regime of the generation of millimeter waves in the synchrotron and established their coherent nature, he proposed to use the open resonator with the creation of quantum generators, and together with Basov formulated the basic principles of quantum strengthening and generation. Prokhorov was editor-in-chief of the last edition of the Great Soviet Encyclopedia, Encyclopedic Dictionary "Physics", oversaw the creation of Collegiate Dictionary, the editor-in-chief of the international journal "Laser Physics". Courage and Prokhorov's resoluteness was confirmed him by the service in the reconnaissance (1941 - 1944) and by that a dramatic incident in his laboratory, when he, deciding to switch to new direction, broke the devices which were used earlier. Medicine is also was part of Prokhorov' interests. During one of our conversations he told me about perspectives use of lasers in struggle with dissemination of the tuberculosis and other illnesses. Once, showing to one of two huge tables in its cabinet, on which stack of letters, cards and telegrams from the whole world, he complained that among this correspondence there is no even of one postcard from Russia.
Russian physicist, zauryad (not past total rate) doctor at the army (1943 – 1945) Nikolai G. Basov (1922 – 2001), being Prokhorov' postgraduate, together with him formulated main principles of the theory of molecular generator - maser amplifier, laser's predecessor.
He was one of the founders of paramagnetic amplifiers, semiconductor and gas-dynamic lasers. Basov was editor-in-chief of the journals "Nature" and "Quantum electronics". He as well actively participated in work of a series of international organizations, for example, in Soviet committee of protection of the world, in Global World Council etc. In 1964 Prokhorov, Basov and American physicist Townes were awarded Nobel Prize on physics for “fundamental works in the area of quantum electronics which led to creation of generators and amplifiers on the basis of principle maser - laser”. After receipt of prize of attitude between Basov and Prokhorov, which before were partnerships, sharply worsened.
Strange situation, as, on recalls of the people who knew Prokhorov, at his resoluteness he was nevertheless very soulful person. Basov produced a different impression.
We will notice of true for the sake of, that American physicist Charles H. Townes the first constructed active maser amplifier, and other American physicist Theodore Maiman constructed active laser on that principle.
But nevertheless American physicist Richard Gordon Gould was the first, who invented the schematic diagram of “the amplifier of the light with the aid of forced radiation”. He named it laser. He anticipated wide use of lasers in industry, in military and household equipment, in science. Notary assured his priority (November 13 1957). However he did not have publications in authoritative scientific journals and did not protect in due time the own inventions by the patents. As it happens frequently, glory and Nobel Prize went to other. However, as the result Gold received a worthy financial compensation, and all troubles could not intervene to him to live up to 85 years.
Of course, we have much of examples on topic . Possibly they will find their place in publications of the author.
